Hula is the national dance of the Hawaiian people. Characterized by intricate combinations of footwork, hip movements, and gestures illustrating prayers, honor songs and historical epics, the movement is connected to the words which are being chanted or sung. More than just a collection of pretty movements, hula is a culturally based system steeped in ritual, commemorating myth and legend, a pantheon of deities and their earthly descendants, sacred symbols, ancestral beings, procreation and forces of nature. In addition to the technique of the dance, our hula students learn classical (kahiko) and contemporary (ʻauana) styles of hula, chanting (oli), crafts, history, language, culture and more.
