A Workshop In Nyunga Nyunga Mbira With Salani Wamkanganise

Join renowned mbira musician, mbira maker and cultural ambassador from Zimbabwe, Salani Wamkanganise, for an enriching six-week series on the Nyunga Nyunga Mbira.

In this course, we will delve into the intricacies of the 16-key Nyunga Nyunga Mbira. Don't worry if you don't have your own Mbira, as we will provide one for your use during the class. Additionally, there will be Mbira instruments available for purchase.

No previous experience is needed, as all levels are welcome. This is an exceptional chance to learn from a culture bearer like Salani, who is not only a skilled musician but also an exceptional teacher.

Salani Wamkanganise, a skilled mbira musician and instrument maker from Harare, Zimbabwe, has dedicated his life to the art of the mbira. Starting in his childhood, he learned from elders and teachers like Musekiwa Chingodza. In 2003, he became a cultural ambassador in Victoria Falls, teaching mbira to tourists. He later showcased his talent in Kobe, Japan, in 2014. Salani has collaborated with various mbira ensembles and bands in Zimbabwe, including Munzwo Mbira Ensemble for Facebook's Sound Collection in 2019. He also spoke at UNESCO's filming of the mbira's induction into the Representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity. Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Salani continues making mbira and introducing Zimbabwean music to communities. He
teaches with Destiny Arts Center and performs with a variety of groups, including his own ensemble, Mbira dzaSoko.
