ʻOri Tahiti literally means “Tahitian Dance”, and is a dynamic expression of an ancient form rooted in interpretation of oral literature through movement. The characteristics of ʻori Tahiti are exemplified by vibrant regalia and powerful percussion. However, the core of the tradition centers on the spiritual and cultural identity of the Tahitian people. Our students are drilled in the basic steps of ʻori Tahiti and introduced to the historical and cultural context of the dance. The ʻōteʻa is the dynamic style of dance performed to a Tahitian drum orchestra, while the ʻaparima are performed to a lively sung accompaniment. Mehura is the form of Tahitian dance featuring slow movement performed to sweet melodic tunes. Each style of ʻori emphasizes strength as well as grace.
